TOI Releases
Disclaimer: TOI releases are from preliminary data and likely to contain false positives. The TOI release data may or may not match the eventual archived data.
What is a TOI Release?
A TOI release includes the TESS Objects of Interest (TOIs) vetted at the TESS Science Office (TSO) and deemed promising candidates for follow-up by the TESS Follow-up Observing Program (TFOP).
A TOI release includes:
- Planet candidates
- Single transit of potential planet candidates
- Other timely astrophysical targets of opportunity.
Where to find the TOI Catalog
The TESS Science Office (TSO) list is directly created from vetting TOIs at the TSO. This version of the TOI list, called the “TOI+” list internally, has the most columns, which includes: more information about the star, fitted parameters, the comments from group vetting, and the ExoFOP-TESS priority ranking. However, a reduced TOI list with only the main parameters can also be downloaded from the database. Both lists have a sector column to track which sectors a TOI has appeared in. The MAST and ExoFOP-TESS lists are derived from the TSO list.
The Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST) list is created for the TOI Releases. This list is for the general science community and is a condensed version of the TOI list from TSO. Furthermore, like the other two lists, it only includes the most recent parameters. Nevertheless, MAST displays all of the TESS data on the website, which includes previous and older parameters. TOIs released before the public data releases on MAST, called “Alerts” are available as a high-level science product (HLSP) at MAST. The TOI List for MAST will be delivered at a date TBD.
The Exoplanet Follow-up Observing Program for TESS (ExoFOP-TESS) list is created for the TESS follow-up observing program (TFOP). TFOP conducts follow-up observations on TOIs using multiple methods such as: ground-based photometry, spectroscopy, imaging, etc. This list has the same columns as the TOI+ list. With this TOI list, community observers further classify the planet candidates based on ground-based observation of the target and nearby contamination sources. The results of the observations are published at ExoFOP-TESS, where each TOI has its own page.
Note: The parameters for the TOIs released early in the process (TOI ID 101-176) may be inconsistent between MAST, MIT, and ExoFOP-TESS. This is because different pipelines were used to confirm these fitted parameters. Parameters in the MAST TOI list are from the SPOC analysis, which is the pipeline of record. Parameters on ExoFOP-TESS and at MIT are from the latest or highest quality data (lowest period uncertainty) for each target.
